OLD FRIENDS

Posted by Pat on August 17, 2008

Many years ago we took Grandma Bowling to Grassy Gap on Memorial Day to decorate the graves. Mallie Stidham and Florence Lewis were there also. They were all in their mid-80’s at that time. They started talking about their childhoods. And how that they had grown up together. They had gone to school , raised their families, and lost loved ones. I wished that I had a tape recorder. It was such a spontaneous thing. They talked about going to school and climbing trees and getting in trouble together. They talked about their courtships. (Grandpa always said that Grandma was the prettiest girl in the county. He may have been biased.) It was such a cool experience. I will never forget it.

That is so amazing! It’s funny how when things like that occur we don’t value them until much later. I wish you could have recorded it too! I’m sure Grandpa thought Grandma was the most beautiful girl in the county lol although Mallie was quite the looker too! I’ll bet that’s too close for Vickie and Gail to call. Such beautiful women.

Grandma had those dimples (like you girls) and they always make a girl pretty! I bet she was beautiful. I talked to Momma and asked her some questions about when she was growing up… it is hard to believe that she is 72 now and there is so much I don’t know. She told me about once (after he come back from the army) she and Dad broke up for awhile, but she didn’t remember any details. I told her I want to know everything she remembers!

Yes, I have a list of questions I want to ask Mom, Dorothy, Jewel, anyone who can remember things.
I have often thought of the conversations I used to have with Granny sitting on her couch. They were so interesting and she could remember and relate so much! Like Carolyn says, now when it is too late, I value those conversations and wish I had recorded them in some way.
I have picture of Grandma Bowling when young and she looks almost exactly like Shirley did when young. She was beautiful.
